About this tool

GPA is the average of your grade points weighted by credit hours: multiply each course’s credit hours by its grade points, add them up and divide by the total credit hours. CGPA, your cumulative GPA, is the same calculation over every semester so far, which is why one semester’s GPA and your CGPA can differ. HEC’s semester guidelines set this formula for universities in Pakistan.

HEC’s guidelines give each letter grade a range of grade points (A is 3.67 to 4.00 for marks of 85 and above), while many universities use fixed values such as A = 4.00, A− = 3.67 and B+ = 3.33. This calculator starts with those common fixed values; if your transcript shows exact grade points, type them instead. For a repeated course, HEC counts only the better grade, so enter just that one.

Frequently asked questions

How is CGPA calculated?

CGPA = the total of (credit hours × grade points) for every course ÷ the total credit hours. For example, a 3-credit A (4.00) and a 2-credit B (3.00) give (12 + 6) ÷ 5 = 3.60.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA covers one semester. CGPA, the cumulative GPA, covers every semester so far, weighted by credit hours.

How do I add a new semester to my current CGPA?

Switch on “I already have a CGPA”, enter your current CGPA and the credit hours it covers, then add the new semester’s courses.

What CGPA do I need to graduate?

HEC’s guidelines set a minimum CGPA of 2.00 for BS degrees and 2.50 for MS and MPhil degrees. Your university may add rules of its own.

How do I convert CGPA to a percentage?

Use the CGPA to percentage tab. HEC has no single conversion formula, so use your university’s if it publishes one.
