How to use Random Team Generator

  1. Paste or type the names, one per line. The count shows under the box.
  2. Choose “Number of teams” or “Team size” and set the number with − and +.
  3. Leave “Pick a leader for each team” on to mark one random leader in each team.
  4. Press Make teams. Shuffle again for a new draw, or copy the teams as text.

Why use Random Team Generator

Even teams

Team sizes never differ by more than one: 10 people in 3 teams become teams of 4, 3 and 3.

By teams or by size

Ask for 4 teams, or for teams of 5; the team maker works out the rest from the list.

A leader each

One random person in each team is marked as its leader or captain.

Copy and share

Copy the teams as plain text for a chat, an email or a slide. The names are kept on this device only.

About this tool

Splitting a class, a workshop or a five-a-side game into teams by hand invites complaints about favourites. A random team generator settles it: paste the list, choose the number of teams or the team size, and the names are shuffled and dealt out like cards, so the teams stay the same size (or one apart) and nobody picks who goes where. It works just as well as a random group generator for group projects and study circles, or as a team picker for a quiz night.

The shuffle uses your browser’s cryptographic random numbers and the Fisher–Yates method, so every way of splitting the list into teams is equally likely. Shuffle again as often as you like. The list stays in your browser for next time and is never uploaded; to pick one name at a time, spin the wheel instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a list into random groups?

Paste the names one per line, choose the number of groups (or people per group) and press Make teams. The names are shuffled and dealt out so the groups are as even as possible.

What if the names don’t divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra person: 10 names in 3 teams give teams of 4, 3 and 3. Which team gets the extra person is random too.

Can I make teams of a fixed size?

Yes. Choose “Team size” and set it, say to 4. Fourteen names then make four teams of 4, 4, 3 and 3, because teams are kept even rather than leaving one team of 2.

How is the leader chosen?

At random: after the shuffle, the first name dealt to each team becomes its leader. Switch the option off if you don’t need leaders.

Are the names saved?

Only in your own browser, so the list is still there next time. They are never uploaded; clear the box to remove them.
