How to use Online Timer

  1. Tap a quick time such as 5 or 10 minutes to start at once, or type hours, minutes and seconds and press Start.
  2. Pick an alarm sound and press Test to check the volume before you rely on it.
  3. Use +1 min to add time, Pause to stop the clock, or Full screen to show big digits to a room.
  4. When the time is up the alarm rings until you press Stop sound. Turn on "Start again when it ends" for repeating intervals.

Why use Online Timer

Rings on time

The sound is lined up the moment you press Start, so it plays on time even in a background tab, where browsers slow page timers down.

Exact to the second

The timer works out the time left from the moment it will end, not by adding up ticks, so it stays exact when you switch tabs.

Full screen, screen on

Show big digits on a projector, TV or tablet, and stop the screen from going to sleep while the timer runs.

Intervals

Turn on "Start again when it ends" to repeat the same time for workout rounds, speaking practice or cooking in batches.

About this tool

An online timer counts down from the time you set and rings at zero, like a kitchen timer on your screen. This one starts with a single tap on a common time (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 45 minutes, 1 or 2 hours), or with any time you type, from one second to 99 hours. The time left also shows in the browser tab, so you can keep an eye on it from another tab.

Browsers slow down timers in background tabs to save battery, which makes many web timers ring late. This countdown timer schedules its alarm with the Web Audio clock as soon as you press Start, so the sound plays on time. Keep the tab open: closing it stops the timer. On a phone, leave "Keep the screen on" turned on, because a locked phone may pause the browser.

Frequently asked questions

Will the timer ring if I switch tabs?

Yes. The alarm is scheduled when you press Start, so it rings on time in a background tab. Keep the tab open and the volume up; closing the tab stops the timer.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Keep the browser open with "Keep the screen on" turned on. If the phone locks, many browsers pause the page, and the alarm may only sound when you open it again.

How long can the timer run?

Up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. Press +1 min to add a minute while it runs.

Can I set a repeating timer?

Yes. Turn on "Start again when it ends" and the timer restarts each time it rings, for intervals such as exercise rounds.

Is anything saved or sent anywhere?

No. The timer runs in your browser. Only your choice of alarm sound is remembered, on this device.

Is it good for the classroom and for kids?

Yes. The large countdown is easy to read from across a classroom on a projector or smart board, and the alarm tells kids clearly when time is up.
