About this tool
Zakat is due once a lunar year on wealth that has stayed above the nisab for the whole year. The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend the silver standard, because it is lower and so more wealth is purified; others use gold. Zakat is 2.5% of your zakatable wealth after deducting debts that are due.
Scholars differ on some items, such as gold jewellery that is worn, long-term investments and pension funds. This calculator gives a clear starting point, not a religious ruling. For complicated situations, ask a scholar or your local zakat authority.
Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab?
The minimum wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver at today's price. Some organisations use 87.48 g and 612.36 g; you can change the weights under "Nisab weights".
Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?
Many scholars and charities recommend silver because the threshold is lower. If you follow a scholar who uses gold, choose gold. The calculator shows both thresholds.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery?
The Hanafi school counts gold and silver jewellery; the other main schools exempt jewellery that is worn regularly. Enter it or leave it out according to the view you follow.
Why is there a 2.577% option?
Zakat is 2.5% per lunar year. If you calculate on a Gregorian year, which is about 11 days longer, some scholars suggest 2.577% to make up the difference.
Which debts can I deduct?
Debts that are due now, such as unpaid bills and the current instalments of a loan. Many scholars do not deduct the whole remaining balance of a long-term loan or mortgage.
How do I calculate zakat on savings?
Add up the cash and bank savings you have held for a lunar year, with any gold, silver and investments, subtract debts due now, and if the total reaches the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of it. Choose your currency, such as taka (BDT) in Bangladesh (BD), rupees, riyals or dirhams, and the calculator does the sums.
