About this tool
The Hijri calendar is lunar: each month starts with a new moon, so a Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year and Islamic dates move earlier every year. This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which Saudi Arabia calculates in advance from astronomical data for official use. It is built into modern browsers, so the conversion runs on your device.
The start of Ramadan, Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr) and Dhu al-Hijjah is usually confirmed by sighting the new moon, in Saudi Arabia as in Pakistan and elsewhere. On those days the actual date can be a day earlier or later than Umm al-Qura, so treat dates for religious occasions as a guide and follow your local announcement.
Frequently asked questions
Which Hijri calendar does this use?
The Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia. It is calculated astronomically in advance, so it always gives the same answer for the same date.
Why is my local Hijri date one day different?
Months such as Ramadan and Shawwal often start when the new moon is sighted. Around those dates your local calendar can be a day ahead of or behind Umm al-Qura.
Which years can I convert?
Hijri years 1356 to 1500, roughly March 1937 to November 2077. That is the period the published Umm al-Qura tables cover.
Can I type Arabic numerals?
Yes. Type Arabic-Indic digits such as ١٤٤٨ or regular digits. The Arabic page shows results in Arabic numerals.
When does Ramadan start this year?
The tool lists the expected first day of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha counted from today, based on Umm al-Qura. Confirm the exact day with your local moon-sighting announcement.
What is the Islamic (Hijri) date today in Saudi Arabia?
Today's Hijri date by the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, is shown at the top of this page as soon as it opens, next to today's Gregorian date.
Is the Hijri date the same as the "Arabic date"?
Yes. When people ask for the Arabic date or the Islamic date today, they mean the Hijri date: the lunar calendar that starts from the Hijra and names months such as Muharram, Ramadan and Dhu al-Hijjah.
Can I use it as a Hijri date calculator?
Yes. Pick any Gregorian date to get its Hijri (Arabic) date, or any Hijri date to get the Gregorian one: it works as a Hijri and Arabic date calculator in both directions.
