Blur face in photo

Hide faces in a photo before you share it: the AI finds them, you check the photo and add any it missed, then blur, pixelate or block them. It runs on your device, so the photo is never uploaded.

How to use Blur Face

  1. Choose a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC), take one with your camera, or tap the example to see it work.
  2. Tap “Find faces”. The first time, the face finder (about 14 MB) downloads once; a box appears on every face it finds.
  3. Check the photo. Tap any face that was missed to add a box, drag a box or its corners to fit, and remove a wrong box with its ×. “Find smaller faces” looks again for faces far from the camera.
  4. Choose Blur, Pixelate or Block, then save the photo as a JPG or PNG, or as WebP where your browser can write it.

Why use Blur Face

Finds the faces for you
YuNet, an open face detector built for group photos, runs in your browser and puts a box on each face it finds, hairline and ears included.
You stay in control
Add, move, resize and remove boxes with a finger, a mouse or the keyboard, and undo any change. A box can hide a number plate or a name too.
Blur, pixelate or block
A heavy blur, large pixel blocks or a solid dark block. Block hides a face for certain; blur and pixelate hide it from people looking at the photo.
No location in the file
The saved photo carries no EXIF data: no GPS position, camera model or thumbnail of the original travels with it.

About this tool

The face blur starts with a search: an AI face detector looks for every face, at a size that suits group photos, and the page draws a box over each one. No detector finds every face, so the page asks you to check. On WIDER FACE, a public test set of group photos, it covered about 9 in 10 faces of 32 pixels or larger in photos of one to three people, and in about one photo in eight at least one face was missed. In photos of four to ten people it covered every face in about two photos in three. That is why adding a box takes one tap on the missed face, and why “Find smaller faces” runs a second search at a higher resolution for faces in the distance.

Choose the effect by what you need. A face blur softens a face into one tone, and pixelating turns it into large squares; both stop people from recognising someone at a glance, but published research has shown that software can sometimes match blurred and pixelated faces, so use Block when a face must not be recognised at all. The boxes work for anything else you want to hide: a car’s number plate, a name badge, an address on a parcel or a child’s school logo. The photo is saved fresh from the page, so it carries no location or camera data, and the tool works on photos only, not on video.

Frequently asked questions

Does it find every face?

Not always. On a public set of group photos it covered about 9 in 10 faces of 32 pixels or larger in photos of one to three people. Faces turned away, half hidden or very small are the ones it misses, so check the photo and tap any face without a box to add one.

Is a blurred face unrecognisable?

Block covers a face completely. Blur and pixelate hide it from people, but software can sometimes match blurred or pixelated faces, so choose Block when it must not be recognised.

Can I blur faces in a photo online for free without uploading it?

Yes. It is free, with no sign-up or watermark, and the photo stays on your device: the face finder (about 14 MB) downloads to your browser once and runs there. It works on pictures of one person or a group, on an iPhone, an Android phone or a computer.

Does the saved photo keep its location?

No. The photo is saved fresh from the page, which writes no EXIF data: no GPS position, camera model or thumbnail of the original goes with it.

Can I blur a number plate or text?

Yes. Tap it, or use “Add a box”, then drag the box over it and resize it with its corners. Block is the safest style for plates and text.

Can it blur faces in a video?

No, it works on photos only. For a video, take a screenshot of the frame you need, or use a video editor.

How do I pixelate a face?

After the faces are found, choose Pixelate under Style. Each face turns into large squares, at least 6 pixels each, and the saved photo is pixelated the same way.

Can I blur faces on an iPhone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on the iPhone and choose the photo from Photos; iPhone HEIC photos open too. The faces are found on the phone itself, and the save button opens the share sheet, where Save Image puts the blurred photo in Photos and Save to Files keeps a copy in Files.

Can I take the photo here and blur the faces before saving it?

Yes. Tap “Take a photo” on a phone or “Use the webcam” on a computer; the photo opens here, and “Find faces” puts a box on every face it sees. A photo taken in the page is not added to your gallery, so the only copy you keep is the blurred one you save.
