About this tool

Roman Urdu is Urdu written in English letters, the way most people text and comment: "kya haal hai" for کیا حال ہے. It is quick on any keyboard, but for a post, a poster, a school assignment or a message to an elder, Urdu script reads better and looks right. This English to Urdu typing tool converts as you type, using a dictionary of the spellings people actually use rather than one fixed system, and letter rules for the rest.

Roman Urdu has no standard spelling, so the same word is written many ways (mein, main, me; theek, thik, teek), and one Roman word can be two Urdu words. The converter picks the usual reading and shows the other one when you tap the word. It is a typing aid, not a translator: it writes the Urdu you typed in Urdu letters, and does not change English words into Urdu.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a Roman Urdu translator?

It writes what you typed in Urdu letters (transliteration). It does not translate English into Urdu: "school" becomes سکول, the Urdu loanword, not مدرسہ.

Why is a word underlined with dots?

It was not in the dictionary and was spelt by sound. Tap it to see other spellings, or keep it in English if it is a name.

How do I write nasal sounds and retroflex letters?

Write them as you say them: kahan or kahaan for کہاں, larka for لڑکا, thanda for ٹھنڈا. Capital T, D and R force ٹ ڈ ڑ in words the dictionary does not know.

Can I type Urdu properly instead?

Yes: add an Urdu keyboard to your phone or computer, then measure yourself with the Urdu typing test.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. It is converted in your browser and kept only in this tab.
