Why use Urdu Typing Test

Real Urdu words

Everyday words and sentences people actually type, in Urdu script, not transliteration.

Any Urdu keyboard

The phone's Urdu keyboard, Windows Urdu, the phonetic layout or an Arabic keyboard: ي ك ه count as ی ک ہ, and vowel marks are ignored.

Typing practice

The words you got wrong are listed with what you typed, so the next round targets them.

Speed in whole words

Words per minute count whole Urdu words, since the five-letter rule is made for English.

About this tool

Urdu typing is a job skill in Pakistan: government and court posts, data entry, journalism and content work ask for a typing test in Urdu, often at 30 to 40 words a minute, alongside English. Practice with real words is the fastest way there, and this Urdu typing test gives you a speed and an accuracy figure every minute or two, with the words to practise.

Urdu is written right to left in Nastaliq or Naskh, and typed on several layouts: the phonetic layout most people learn (letters on the English keys that sound like them), the older InPage layout, and phone keyboards. The test accepts them all, treats the Arabic keyboard's yeh, kaf and heh as the Urdu letters, and ignores tashkeel, so only real mistakes count. On a computer without an Urdu layout, the built-in English-keys mode lets you type by sound straight away.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Urdu on my computer?

Add the Urdu keyboard in Windows or macOS settings, or switch on "English keys" in this test to type by sound: k ک, t ت, T ٹ, d د, D ڈ, r ر, R ڑ, n ن, N ں, h ح, H ھ, o ہ, y ے, i ی.

What speed do Urdu typing jobs ask for?

Many Pakistani government and data-entry posts ask for 30 to 40 words a minute in Urdu, and 40 to 50 in English. Check the advertisement for the exact figure.

Does the test work with an Arabic keyboard?

Yes. The Arabic keyboard's ي ك ه are accepted as the Urdu ی ک ہ, so a word typed on it counts as right.

Can I practise Urdu typing on my phone?

Yes. Add Urdu under your phone's keyboard settings (Gboard or the iPhone keyboard) and type as usual; the test counts whole words.

How can I improve my Urdu typing speed?

Practise a few minutes every day, keep your fingers on the home row and look at the screen instead of the keyboard. Accuracy first: speed follows once the key positions are in your fingers.
