About this tool

Indian missions abroad now apply ICAO photo requirements to passport photos. The Ministry of External Affairs guideline sets the size at 630 × 810 pixels, in colour, on a white background, with your face taking up 80–85% of the photo, taken from about 1.5 metres away. Glasses come off to avoid reflections, your eyes are open and your mouth is closed, and the photo must be unaltered by computer software.

Some missions add their own details. The Embassy of India in Berne, for example, caps the file at 250 KB, while outsourcing centres in some countries still ask for 2 × 2 inch prints. Applying in India at a Passport Seva Kendra? Your photo is taken there, so you do not need one.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an Indian passport photo?

For ICAO-compliant applications abroad: 630 × 810 pixels, the shape of a 35 × 45 mm print, on a white background.

Do I need a photo at a Passport Seva Kendra?

No. Photos are taken at the Passport Seva Kendra and Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.

Can I wear glasses?

No. The guideline says to take glasses off to avoid reflections.

Is there a file size limit?

The MEA guideline does not set one, but some missions do: the Embassy in Berne allows up to 250 KB. This tool's photo is well under that.

How do I take an Indian passport photo at home?

Use a plain white background and even light, look straight at the camera with your eyes open and mouth closed, and keep your ears visible if you can. Then crop it here to the MEA size.

Is this Indian passport photo tool free online?

Yes. It is a free online Indian passport photo tool and editor, with no app and no upload: it crops and resizes your photo to the official size and specifications. It is not an official checker, so compare the result with the rules and requirements on the official website before you submit it.
